Fashion critic and designer Richard Blackwell a.k.a Mr.Blackwell died Sunday of complications from an intestinal infection; He was 86.
He was famous for his annual worst-dressed list .
Here are a few examples of his fashion criticism:
Miss America looked “like an armadillo with cornpads.”
Madonna: “The Bare-Bottomed Bore of Babylon.”
Barbra Streisand: “She looks like a masculine Bride of Frankenstein.”
Christina Aguilera: “A dazzling singer who puts good taste through the wardrobe wringer.”
Meryl Streep: “She looks like a gypsy abandoned by a caravan.”
Sharon Stone: “An over-the-hill Cruella DeVille.”
Lindsay Lohan: “From adorable to deplorable.”
Patti Davis: “Packs all the glamour of an old, worn-out sneaker.”
Ann Margret: “A Hells Angel escapee who invaded the Ziegfeld Follies on a rainy night.”
Camilla Parker-Bowles: “The Duchess of Dowdy.”
Bjork: “She dances in the dark — and dresses there, too.”
Spears: “Her bra-topped collection of Madonna rejects are pure fashion overkill.”
He also said about Princess Diana: She had gone from “a very young, independent, fresh look” to a “tacky, dowdy” style. Later, when she made it as a regular on Blackwell’s favorites list, he described her the “fabulous fashion independents.”
Mr.Blackwell, who also did some Broadway acting and TV shows, told the Los Angeles Times in 1968 that designers were forgetting that their job “is to dress and enhance women. … Maybe I should have named the 10 worst designers instead of blaming the women who wear their clothes.”
Victoria Beckham, who has been crowned in his 2008 worst-dressed list, must be happy now!
He called her style “skinny-mini monstrosities.”
Mr. Blackwell’s Complete List Of Worst Dressed Celebs in 2008 include:
Amy Winehouse-“Part 50’s car-hop horror”
Mary-Kate Olsen-“She resembles a tattered toothpick-trapped in a hurricane.”
Fergie
Kelly Clarkson
Eva Green
Avril Lavigne
Jessica Simpson
Lindsay Lohan
Alison Arngrim
He also said:
“Let it be said, however, that my criticisms are based purely on their fashion flaws — I’m sure they’re all wonderful people beneath the deluge of dreck they drape themselves in.”
